It is the last church built in Badolato Superiore, not by the will of the inhabitants, but by the will and the means of a certain Salvatore Aponte, who, around 1840, left his native town of Vico Equense in Campania and came to live in Badolato.

He was successful here and it is said that with the money he found in a recently acquired field, he had the church built on another field he had bought in the valley, on the banks of a small stream known as the Fiumarella della Provvidenza (Stream of Providence).

The statue of the Virgin Mary kept there is taken out in procession every year on the day dedicated by the Catholic Church to Our Lady of Providence. The procession takes place in the old town with traditional honours. This is made possible by the commitment of volunteers who take over from time to time, as the small church has no confraternity to look after it.
